Lake Mary Doctor Helps You Understand Your Cholesterol

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy fat like substance that is vital for normal body functioning. One-third of it is formed from your diet and the other two-thirds is produced by your liver. Cholesterol is in our blood and it attaches itself to carriers called lipoproteins.

There are two types of lipoproteins. There are low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) and these carry the cholesterol into the walls of your arteries, causing build up in your arteries and blockage of blood flow. Then there are high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), these proteins take the cholesterol away from the artery walls and take them to the liver where they are dumped into the intestines and passed out of the body. LDL cholesterol is considered ‘bad’ cholesterol, whereas HDL cholesterol is considered ‘good’ cholesterol.

What it can do:

Cholesterol is a major cause of atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries making it narrow for blood flow. When atherosclerosis hits the coronary arteries, it can lead to angina or heart attacks. If it hits arteries that supply blood to the brain, it can cause stroke. If it affects leg arteries, it can cause peripheral artery disease.

The best way to prevent any of this from happening to you is to keep an eye on on your blood pressure and blood sugar. If you take a visit to your doctor in lake mary, they will take a blood test to measure your cholesterol levels and make sure it’s at a desirable target, and if there are any problems they can help you find ways to fix it.
